Quotes

“As a writer, you really have to come to your own truth. For example, in poetry and in a memoir, and in novels, a character's truth. And if you're not telling the truth, I truly believe the reader picks it up on the radar”.

“As a memoir, there are many hard things, I think the hardest thing was to realize that when the manuscript was not finished and I had to keep changing the frame of the narrative. Realizing that some of the most painful events had to be included in this story”.

“Animals offer us this presence like a safety zone because we can have the space then step back or move around and think more. We're not kind of jammed against the wall with the problem of finishing the book”.

“I've always felt driven to write and other people have felt driven to do other things. And it's like there's a point where you realize that you have this sort of purpose, I see it as a path. It doesn't mean that you have to do it 24 hours a day and if you're not doing it, it doesn’t mean that you're not any good at it”.
